Will it fit?

Three questions, in order: does it fit the room, does it fit the gap, does the box fit the stairs. This page answers all three for every piece.

The two numbers to measure first

The width of the wall the bed goes against, and the narrowest point on the way in: a door frame, a stair turn, a lift door. Write both down before reading on. Everything below compares against those two.

1. Beds and the wall

Frames are named by the mattress they take. The frame adds to that width: 6 cm for the oak, ash and pine frames (a 3 cm rail each side), 2 cm for the steel frame, and 20 cm for the low platform bed with its ledge. A nightstand needs its own width plus 5 cm of air each side.

160 × 200166 cm162 cm180 cm2.7 m; comfortable at 3.0 m
180 × 200186 cm182 cm200 cm2.9 m; comfortable at 3.2 m

Length is 206 to 210 cm for every frame, 220 cm for the platform bed. Leave 70 cm to walk past the foot of the bed; 60 cm works, 50 cm means turning sideways. The oak bed with drawers needs 65 cm clear on each side for the drawers to open and is not for a bed pushed against a side wall.

2. The gap beside the bed

Gap availableWhat fits
Under 35 cmNothing on the floor. The 60 cm oak wall shelf above the mattress, or the platform bed's ledge.
35 to 45 cmThe round oak stool (Ø 32), the smoked oak bedside table (40 cm), the steel cube (40 cm)
45 to 55 cmThe ash open nightstand (42 cm), the round tray table (Ø 45)
55 cm and overThe oak drawer nightstand (50 cm, plus 45 cm in front to open the drawer)

Height matters as much as width: a nightstand top within 5 cm of the top of the mattress is the one you can reach without looking. Mattress top is usually 50 to 65 cm from the floor on our frames; the nightstands are 48 to 55 cm.

3. Boxes, doors and stairs

Everything flat-packed ships in boxes no thicker than 16 cm, so the question is length round a turn. The figures below are the box sizes and the tightest access each has been delivered through. A standard internal door is 76 to 83 cm wide; a lift car is usually 110 cm deep and 210 cm tall, which takes the longest box on its end.

Still not sure
